Bernard Patrick Maloy
Bernard Patrick, “Pat,” Maloy, died Nov. 28 after a courageous battle with cancer. His family was at his bedside.
In 1986, he became assistant professor at the Division of Kinesiology, Department of Sports Management and Communication. In 1993, he was promoted to associate professor, teaching courses in the legal aspects of sport and facility management.
Maloy loved teaching and promoted excellence in analytic and writing skills. He was known as a caring professor, who challenged his students and took great care in evaluating their work. According to Maloy, the students were more challenging than any jury he ever faced. His awards included a State of Michigan Teaching Excellence Award and an Academic Leadership Fellowship to the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.
Maloy’s research focused on legal and public policy issues of sports and sports management, as well as liability concerns for stadiums and arenas.
He served as a faculty mentor for the U-M Mentorship Program, and as a member of the Ombuds Training Task Force and the Kinesiology Executive Committee. Maloy previously served as a member of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, the University Residency Appeals Committee, the Advisory Committee to the Safety and Security Committee and the Seminar on Teaching Committee. He was a long-time marshal at the commencement activities, and for many years he actively helped the Department of Athletics in its student recruitment activities.
Maloy received a B.A. in history from Wheeling College, a law degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
His career began with a law practice in North Judson, Ind., in 1972–1983 where he was the sole legal practitioner in a small, rural town.
After graduate studies, Maloy began to integrate his interest in athletics with his legal skills. He worked in corporate management for MDS Qantel, a computer company serving many teams of the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and many university athletic departments.
Maloy is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nora Alton Maloy; two sons, Michael (Carolina) and Barney (Jill); siblings Mark, John; Tessie Steffens, Mary Walker and Maggie McCullough; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Kinesiology has established the Bernard Patrick Maloy Award for Writing Excellence, to be given for undergraduate writing excellence in the areas of sport and public policy.
