David Henry Reider, 83, professor emeritus of art, died Jan. 15 in Nokomis, Fla.
He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, April 6, 1916, the only child of Rosalia Veronica Murphy Reider and Karl Frederick Reider. He went to college at the Cleveland School of Art and Design and worked at General Motors as a designer.
Reider taught at Albright Art School and Buffalo State Teacher’s College (later renamed SUNY) in Buffalo, New York, before becoming professor of art, architecture and design at the U-M. He was the founder of the photography department there and taught for 35 years before retiring to Nokomis in 1982.
He inspired many young students with his unique way of looking at life through the lens of a camera. He was an active member of the University of Michigan Club of Sarasota/Manatee in his retirement years, and an honorary member of Alpha Rho Chi fraternity.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Jane Hopkins (formerly of Portsmouth); two daughters: Linda R. Smith of Lubbock, Texas, and Karen R. Mitchell of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren: David Albert Smith, of Katy, Texas; Shari Anne Smith, of Malibu Calif.; Heather Elizabeth Mitchell, of Rockport, Maine; Sara Diane Smith Hartsfield, of Malibu, Calif.; Steven Andrew Smith and Timothy Reider Smith, both of Lubbock, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Joshua David Smith, of Katy, Texas.
