Obituary

Josip Matovinovic

Josip Matovinovic, professor emeritus of internal medicine, died Aug. 30.

Matovinovic was a professor in the Division of Nuclear Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine in 1959–85. He was educated in Zagreb, Croatia, where he became chief of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Divisions. He was a member of the Thyroid Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1947–48 and 1956–59.

Matovinovic’s research focused on thyroid disease and cancer and the importance of iodine in nutrition. He was well known for his humanistic approach to his patients and is especially remembered by his students for his patient-focused teaching. In recognition of his teaching, Matovinovic received the Silver Shovel Award and an honorary title from the Galens Medical Society.

A memorial service for Matovinovic will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at Ford Amphitheater, University Hospital. A reception with Mrs. Matovinovic will follow.
