Northwalk, Safewalk ready for new term
The University’s student-initiated nighttime escort programs, Safewalk and Northwalk, are ready to step into another year of service to the University community. Students, staff and faculty are all welcome to participate in both services, either as volunteers or clients, note the student coordinators. The programs will celebrate their 10th anniversary of service to the U-M community this year. A second meeting, for Safewalk volunteers, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wed. (Sept. 18) in Lecture Room 2, MLB. Safewalk serves those within 20 minutes of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library.
Northwalk volunteers met last night at Bursley Hall. Northwalk provides service to any North Campus destination within 20 minutes of Bursley Hall.
Volunteers are asked to take a two-hour shift once weekly. All volunteers work in teams of two, usually a male and female and sometimes two females. Organizers are willing to accommodate volunteers who would like to work together, and weekend duty is limited to four hours per semester.
Northwalk coordinator Tara Hillary says volunteering for Safewalk or Northwalk is a great way to get to know the campus better and meet new people. Volunteers, she said, are typically outgoing, willing to talk and put people at ease.
Regular hours for the two services, beginning Sept. 29, are:
Safewalk: 8 p.m.-2:30 a.m., Sun.-Thurs and 8-11:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat.
Northwalk: 8 p.m.-1:30 a.m., Sun.-Thurs and 8-11:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat.
Until Sept. 29, Safewalk services are limited to the hours of 8-11:30 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., and Northwalk hours are 8-11:30 p.m. Sun.-Thurs.
