Nominate your favorite staff member

Brochures went out last week to approximately 24,000 members of the University community calling for nominations for 1995 U-M Staff Recognition Awards. The awards will be presented at the 16th Annual Workplace of the ’90s Conference, “Claiming Ownership: A Balance of Freedom and Responsibility,” May 18 and May 19.

With support from the Office of the Provost, the awards are designed to honor those who have made marked contributions to the mission and work of the University.

Awards will be made in the following categories:

* Distinguished Service Award: To honor a staff member who has provided distinguished service to the University and the community.

* Exemplary Team Award: To honor a group of staff members who have formally or informally functioned as an exemplary team.

* Outstanding Leadership Award: To honor a staff member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision and initiative.

Each individual award carries a prize of $750. Team winners will divide $2,000. Additional recognition gifts will be presented to winners and finalists.

Nominees should display many of the following overall characteristics for any of the awards:

* Special achievement or contribution to the unit.

* Exemplary service, cooperation and/or team-building.

* Ability to overcome adverse situations.

* Service as a role model or mentor.

* Attentiveness to the multicultural nature of the U-M community.

* Sensitivity to co-workers’ family obligations, as well as training and development pursuits.

* Willingness and ability to assist others and to elevate group goals.

Additional specific characteristics are sought for each award.
