New Web site on undergraduate research is up
By Lee Katterman
Office of the Vice President for Research
The University has started to build a comprehensive Web site about undergraduate research and creative work. The Web site—www.undergraduate.research.umich.edu—features information about programs and policies supporting undergraduate research at the U-M and other universities, as well as documents published by the federal government and higher education organizations. With this announcement, the site developers invite the entire campus to submit more material about activities to enhance the integration of research and undergraduate learning in all of the schools and colleges.
The site also delivers Web video of U-M students describing their experiences working with faculty members and graduate students on research projects and participating in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and similar programs.
The site includes:
• An ever-growing guide to U-M programs and initiatives that provide meaningful opportunities for undergraduate students to undertake research and creative work.
• Links to reports published by U-M faculty and program administrators that assess the effects of such programs as UROP on undergraduate learning and academic success.
• Detailed information about the 1997 National Science Foundation (NSF) Recognition Award for the Integration of Research and Education (RAIRE), reports of activities supported by the $500,000 award, and links to Web pages at other institutions that received NSF Recognition Awards. There also are sections featuring the two U-M programs recognized by the NSF—UROP and the Women in Science and Engineering-Residential Program.
• A guide to reports and analyses of the entire field of research-based learning and undergraduate research experiences, as published by federal agencies, foundations and other organizations.
The site was operational as of Oct. 1, although new material is being added regularly. The Web site construction has been supported in part by the 1997 RAIRE award. Contact [email protected], or call 647-9085 to suggest material to publish on or link from the U-M undergraduate research Web site.
Technical note: This site is best viewed with version 4 or higher of Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Viewing the video available from the Web site is best accomplished with a high-speed Internet link such as an ethernet connection.
