Neidhardt named interim vice president for research
Frederick C. Neidhardt, the Frederick G. Novy Distinguished University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and associate vice president for research, will begin his term as acting vice president for research on July 1. He will fill the post while Homer A. Neal serves as interim president of the University.
Neidhardt has been associate vice president for research since 1993, and “his superlative understanding of research issues in the contemporary University, his wealth of administrative and teaching experience and his stature as an educator and scholar … will contribute greatly to the Office of the Vice President for Research and the University community,” noted President James J. Duderstadt in recommending the appointment to the Regents earlier this month. “We are delighted that Prof. Neidhardt has agreed to accept this appointment.”
Neidhardt joined the U-M in 1970 and served as chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in 1970 –92. He was appointed the Frederick C. Novy Distinguished University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in 1989.
