The Museum of Art will observe a “Day Without Art” 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Museum Apse for World AIDS Day. The day is an opportunity to reflect on the HIV-AIDS epidemic and its devastating impact on the international artistic community. More than 1,500 artists have died from AIDS, including photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died at age 43, and painter Keith Haring, who died at age 32.
Many sculptures, including the outdoor Daedalus and the indoor Flora and Nydia, as well as paintings in the Apse will be covered in black cloth as a symbol of mourning. There will be continuous screenings of Blue, a 76-minute film made by filmmaker Derek Jarman after he lost his sight to AIDS-related complications.
