Move-in Aug. 29-31 means changed traffic patterns
Traffic patterns on several city streets on or near campus will change beginning at 6 a.m. Aug. 29 and continue until 10 p.m. Aug. 31. That’s when students who live on campus will be returning for fall term.
The schedule, implemented last year, staggers student arrivals according to their residence hall. First-year and transfer students will move in on Aug. 29 or Aug. 30, depending on their lease assignment. Students may arrive any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 6-9 p.m. on their designated day, but have been asked not to arrive on campus before 9 a.m. or to drive on or around campus 4-6 p.m.
University Housing representatives and Ann Arbor city officials developed the staggered move-in to alleviate traffic congestion that occurred in previous years.
“We’re trying to give University and community employees the opportunity to arrive and depart from campus with relative ease,” says Alan Levy, University Housing director of public affairs and information.
He encourages faculty and staff to choose alternate routes away from residence halls to allow freer passage. Officers from Housing Security, the Department of Public Safety and the Ann Arbor Police Department will be stationed at entry points near main intersections to help keep traffic moving and to direct traffic. Volunteers from residence hall welcoming committees will help direct vehicles to unloading spaces near each hall.
Some parking lots will be closed. The triangle lot at the intersection of Thompson, Packard and Madison will be closed Monday, Aug. 28-Sept. 1. Renovation of the Thompson Street structure is on schedule and it should be open for move-in. Entrance to the structure via Thompson Street will be allowed until 9 a.m. each day. Staff also may enter via Division Street from 6 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The Division Street exit will be converted to two-way traffic during this time.
Beginning at 2:30 p.m. Division will revert to an exit only, and all traffic will be required to exit onto Division. Traffic may not exit onto Thompson Street at any time during the day.
Parking space at the Washington Heights lot will be reduced, moving parkers to satellite lots during Move-In. Questions about parking throughout the week should be directed to Parking Services, 764-8291, ext. 7.
“The University Housing Move-In Planning Group and the University Housing/City of Ann Arbor Move-In Task Force have worked since spring to detail nearly every aspect of Move-In,” Levy says. “Both groups have tried to make Move-In as unobtrusive to the community as possible.”

Aug. 28:
Students participating in fall term orientation.
Aug. 29:
First-year and transfer students living in Baits I and II, Bursley Hall, Cambridge House, Martha Cook, East Quad, Fletcher Hall, Henderson House, Alice Lloyd, Mary Markley (Blagdon, Elliot, Reeves and Scott Houses), Helen Newberry, Oxford Housing, South Quadrangle and Stockwell.
Aug. 30:
First-year and transfer students living in Couzens, Betsey Barbour, Mary Markley (Butler, Fisher, Frost, Little and VanTyne Houses), Mosher-Jordan and West Quadrangle.
Aug. 31:
Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students.
Sept. 1-4:
Open move-in days for remaining students. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Sept. 1, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sept. 2-4.
Many two-way roads on campus will become one-way streets during move-in, 6 a.m. Aug. 29-10 p.m. Aug. 31. The following streets will become one-way for this period:
On Central Campus, Thompson will be one-way going south between William and Packard. Maynard will be one-way heading south between William and Jefferson. Jefferson will be one-way going west from Maynard to Division. Madison will be closed from Packard to Thompson and one-way east from Thompson to State. There will be no left turn from Madison to State.
East University will be one-way heading North from Hill Street to Willard. Willard will be one-way going east from East University to Church Street. Church Street will be one-way going south from Willard to Hill.
Near the Hill area, Ann Street will be one-way going east from Zina Pitcher (formerly Washtenaw Place) to Observatory. Observatory will be one-way heading south from Ann to North University. East Medical Center Drive will be one-way heading east from Observatory to the intersection of Washington Heights. Washington Heights will be one-way west from East Medical Center Drive to Observatory.
On North Campus, Bursley Hall’s south driveway will be one-way heading west, and its north driveway will be one-way heading east.
