U-M Dearborn anthropology Prof. Daniel E. Moerman has been appointed to the William E. Stirton Professorship for a five-year term. His appointment was approved by the Regents at their July meeting.
Moerman, a member of the Dearborn faculty since 1973, specializes in medical ethnobotany, and his catalog, Medicinal Plants of Native America, is a standard reference in the field.
“Prof. Moerman is the archetypal teacher-scholar says Chancellor James C. Renick. “He has a passion for anthropology and views his courses as invitations to think both multidimensionally and creatively. His goal is to teach students to be ‘intellectual entrepreneurs’—to break out of their boxes and convince others of their ideas. His course evaluations are stunning and consistent, a measure of his success in the classroom.”
Moerman was the first chair of Dearborn’s Faculty Senate when it was formed in 1993. He is president of the Faculty of Small Anthropology Programs, a section of the American Anthropological Association that represents the professional interests of anthropologists in programs with five or fewer faculty.
The William E. Stirton Professorship honors the U-M vice president who was the first director of the Dearborn campus when it was established in 1959, a post he held until 1968.
