Minority equity conference is this week

Achieving parity in enrollment, retention and graduation for underrepresented minority students in higher education will be addressed at the Michigan Department of Education’s Office of Minority Equity conference Friday and Saturday (Ma rch 15–16) in Novi.
The conference, “Equity Within the Classroom: Graduating Minority Students,” will feature workshops led by David Schoem, LS&A assistant dean for undergraduate education; Mary Hummel, director of the 21st Century Program; and Universi ty psychologists Charles Behling and Todd Sevig.
In addition, President James J. Duderstadt will be honored for his contributions to multicultural diversity in higher education, and keynote speeches will be given by nationally known educators Samuel Betances, Jane Elliott and Rosa Guerrero.
Among the workshop topics are redesigning the institution to meet the needs of minority students; retention strategies; conflict management in the classroom; the use of peer tutors; cooperative learning and enhanced communication; and intergroup r elations.
