Saturday, Nov. 11, 7:45 p.m.: It was nearly the 14th hour of the 10th day of Michigan Radio’s fall on-air fund drive, “Building a Dream,” when the financial goal of $200,000 was reached.

As promised, station staff stopped the drive, even though pledge calls continued to come in, putting the total $2,400 over the goal.

An additional $18,300 will be provided by corporate matching programs, and $8,300 will be generated by local businesses participating in the Challenge Grant Program.

The final tally: $229,000 in the most successful campaign in the station’s history.

Michigan Radio also had set a goal of enrolling 1,000 new contributing members during the drive. This was met and surpassed the last day of the campaign, with 1,155 new members, the largest number of new members ever.

To encourage listeners to call in pledges during certain times of the drive, Michigan Radio established a Challenge Grant Program with local businesses, who agreed to contribute a minimum of $500 each.

Participants in the program were the Ann Arbor News, Ulrich’s Books and Electronics, Coleman’s Four Seasons Market, Washtenaw Community College, Gandy Dancer Restaurant, Affordable Home Car, DCM Corp. and Sweet Lorraine’s Cafe & Bar.

Michigan Radio, the University’s listener-supported broadcast service, can be heard on WUOM, 91.7 (Ann Arbor); WVGR, 104.1 (Grand Rapids) and WFUM, 91.1 (Flint).
