Michigan Radio named best in state
Michigan Radio was named “Best Public Radio Station” by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) at the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference Feb. 29. The award marks the third time in the past four years that Michigan Radio won the top honor among the state’s 17 public radio stations.
Michigan Radio also won five news awards from MAB for reporting on school issues in Detroit and Grand Rapids, coverage of the state’s program to extend health insurance to low-income children and ongoing reports on health care and health policy.
Michigan Radio is now online at www.michiganradio.org. The online service includes local news and information programming, plus such programs as National Public Radio’s news magazines “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” as well as midday talk and interview shows, including “The Diane Rehm Show,” “Fresh Air with Terry Gross,” and “The Todd Mundt Show.” The station’s complete program schedule is on the Web site.
Michigan Radio also plans to launch a separate online classical music service featuring programming from Minnesota Public Radio’s “Classical 24.”
Michigan Radio includes WUOM 97.1FM (Ann Arbor), WFUM 91.1FM (Flint) and WVGR 104.1FM (Grand Rapids).
M-CARE receives ‘commendable’ accreditation
M-CARE, the U-M’s managed care organization, recently received a “commendable” accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for M-CARE’s commercial, Medicare and Medicaid HMO health plans. Moving from “accredited” to “commendable” means that M-CARE has met or exceeded NCQA’s requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.
M-CARE is one of seven Michigan plans to achieve this status for a commercial HMO plan and one of five to reach it for a Medicare HMO. The NCQA on-site and off-site accreditation process utilizes a team of physicians and managed care experts and a national oversight committee to evaluate how well a health plan manages all parts of its delivery system–physicians, hospitals, other providers and administrative services–in order to continuously improve health care for its members.
Bravo! wins Tobasco Cookbook Award
Bravo!, the University Musical Society’s (UMS) music-oriented cookbook, recently won second place in the Tobasco Community Cookbook Awards. According to the judges, “From the glossy cover to the beautiful color photographs inside, the book succeeds in illustrating the long history of great classical music in Ann Arbor.”
Bravo! highlights the 120 years of UMS concerts in Ann Arbor through anecdotes and recipes from local and touring musicians.
