Matthews will be interim executive vice president and CFO

Chandler W. Matthews will serve as interim executive vice president and chief financial officer of the University of Michigan. His appointment, effective Jan. 1, was approved by the Regents at their Nov. 14–15 meeting.

“Chandler Matthews has had extensive background and experience in the University’s administration and financial affairs,” Interim President Homer A. Neal said. “We are very grateful that he is willing to return from retirement to serve the University during this interim period.”

Matthews came to the U-M as controller in 1970. He was promoted to associate vice president for finance in 1989 and served in that position until his retirement last April.

He was responsible for the management and operations of Financial Operations, Payroll, Investment, Financial Analysis and Cost Reimbursement, Contract Administration, Insurance and Risk Management, the Cashier’s Office, and the Benefits Office.

Before joining the University, he worked for General Motors Overseas Operations, serving as administrative assistant to the treasurer and assistant comptoller.

He received his B.A. degree from Beloit College and his M.B.A. from the U-M.
