Matlock charged in CCRB incident
John Matlock, assistant vice provost and director of the Office of Academic and Multicultural Initiatives, was charged April 18 with resisting arrest and assault and battery in connection with a Feb. 17 incident at the Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB).
Warrants were issued by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office following a two-month investigation into the incident by the Michigan State Police, according to a press release issued by the State Police.
The incident occurred when Matlock arrived at the CCRB to judge an event sponsored by the Black Volunteer Network. Shortly before his arrival, Department of Public Safety officers had responded to an emergency call from a CCRB staff member concer ned about overcrowding in the building. When Matlock attempted to enter the building, a series of events unfolded that culminated in his being handcuffed and taken to DPS headquarters.
The University’s Police Grievance Committee has begun an investigation into the incident as well as a review of more general issues concerning procedures and practices.
The committee, composed of students, faculty and staff, reviews complaints against the campus police and can recommend appropriate disciplinary measures. It was developed when the University deputized its own officers.
