Management Institute participants get global look at U
A session led last Friday by social work Prof. John Tropman on faculty governance is among a number of presentations being made to participants in this year’s Business and Finance Management Institute, which is sponsored by Farris W. Womack, executive vice president and chief financial officer.
The Institute, now in its fifth year, “provides an opportunity for staff members to gain leadership and management training and to obtain a broader perspective of the diverse areas of the University and of higher education in general, Womack notes.
Participants in the intensive nine-week program include office, technical and professional/administrative staff, primarily from Business and Finance units.
Now into the fifth week, they have heard a number of speakers, including, in addition to Tropman:
Steve Pokorny and staff: U-M Challenge Program in Team Building.
President James J. Duderstadt: Future Vision of the University.
Regent Philip H. Power: Governance from the Standpoint of Regents.
Farris Womack: Issues Facing Higher Education.
Randy Harris: Principles for Effective Leadership.
Phil Abruzzi and staff: Purchasing, Stores and Auxiliary Services.
Paul Spradlin and staff: Physical Plant.
Fred Mayer: History of University Planning and campus tour.
Henry Baier and staff: Safety in the Workplace, Office of Occupational Safety and Environmental Health.
Leo Heatley and staff: Safety and Security.
Lincoln Faller: The Intellectual Mission—Undergraduate Education. n Robert Weisbuch: The Intellectual Mission—Graduate Education.
Homer Neal and staff: The Intellectual Mission—Research.
Sam Plice and staff: Information Technology and Process Innovation.
Jackie McClain and staff: Human Resources and Affirmative Action.
The coming weeks will provide additional exciting and educational experiences for the participants.
In addition to the presentations, the participants are working on special project teams to examine issues at the University and to identify potential solutions.
Each team will present its findings on the final afternoon of the Institute on March 8.
