Man charged in Baits fire

The University Record, October 2 , 1995 An Oakland County man not affiliated with the University was arraigned Sept. 25 on charges stemming from a Sept. 22 fire in Baits Housing on North Campus.

U-M Department of Public Safety officials responded to the fire and determined that it was set deliberately, according to Capt. James Smiley.

Working with the Ann Arbor Police Department and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department, DPS officers developed source information that focused the investigation on Dale Lipke.

He was arraigned on a count of arson of a dwelling house and conspiracy to commit arson of a dwelling. Both are felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The preliminary exam is set for Oct. 4. Lipke was remanded to the County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Smiley says investigation of the case continues, with most of the work being handled by the Sheriff’s Department.
