The University of Michigan continues to invest in infrastructure and building construction and remodeling across campus. Here is a look at major projects underway as U-M starts the 2023-24 academic year.

Edward and Rosalie Ginsberg Building
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $10.5 million
Construction start: Spring 2023
Estimated construction completion: Spring 2025
Project at a glance: The project includes the demolition of the outdated 7,500-square-foot Madelon Pound House and construction of an 11,000-square-foot building to include collaborative meeting spaces, a resource library, student organization space, support and administration spaces.
Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building
Location: North Campus
Budget: $145 million
Construction start: Spring 2022
Estimated construction completion: Summer 2025
Project at a glance: This building of approximately 163,000 gross square feet will provide expansion space for the Computer Science and Engineering Department and also provide space to relocate the School of Information to North Campus.
Hayward Street Geothermal Facility
Location: North Campus
Budget: $20 million
Construction start: Winter 2023
Estimated construction completion: Winter 2025
Project at a glance: This project, recommended by the President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality, includes building a geothermal plant on Hayward Street adjacent to the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building to supply its heating and cooling.
President’s Residence Infrastructure Renovation
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $15 million
Construction start: Spring 2022
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2023
Project at a glance: This project involving the oldest building on campus will address essential Americans with Disabilities Act and accessibility upgrades for the public ground floor, as well as improving capacity for events to enhance functionality of the living space for the private residence space, and updates that support safety and security.
Medical Science Unit I B and D Wings Renovation
Location: Medical Campus
Budget: $42 million
Construction start: Winter 2023
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2025
Project at a glance: This project will renovate and repurpose approximately 60,000 gross square feet of space for the Medical School’s Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics and several other Medical School units, converting obsolete wet lab research space into an efficient and collaborative dry and computational research environment.
College of Pharmacy Building
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $141 million
Construction start: Winter 2023
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2025
Project at a glance: A new 142,000-gross-square-foot building on the corner of Glen Avenue and East Huron Street will house active learning-style classrooms, laboratories, associated support spaces, faculty and administrative offices, and student-focused areas.
Central Campus Recreation Building
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $165 million
Construction start: Fall 2022
Estimated construction completion: Spring 2025
Project at a glance: The 200,000-square-foot building will include modern gymnasiums, a track for jogging and walking, spaces for weight and cardiovascular training, group exercise rooms, aquatics, climbing areas, courts for squash and racquetball, locker rooms, support and administration spaces.
U-M Health Clinical Pathology Relocation and Renovations
Location: North Campus Research Complex
Budget: $160 million
Construction start: Summer 2016
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2023
Project at a glance: Pathology laboratories within University Hospital, University Hospital South, Medical Science Unit I, North Ingalls Building, and leased space will be relocated to North Campus Research Complex Buildings 30, 35, 36 and 60.
U-M Health D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion
Location: Medical Campus
Budget: $920 million
Construction start: Spring 2021
Estimated construction completion: Spring 2025
Project at a glance: The 690,000-gross-square-foot Clinical Inpatient Tower project accommodates an inpatient-care program with 264 single-occupancy patient rooms and 23 surgical/interventional radiology suites. The patient program emphasizes improved access to clinical neurosciences and cardiac care services. Relocation of existing clinical services from University Hospital will allow for future redesign and growth for patient programs remaining in that facility.
