M-Rover is lowered over the side (above) of a Coast Guard cutter to search the icy waters for the Ford Bronco. Below, the remains of the vehicle are nearly unrecognizable.

M-Rover, the U-M’s underwater robot, traveled to the Mackinac Bridge recently to assist authorities in the underwater search and recovery of a vehicle that plunged over the side of the bridge, killing its lone occupant. The Ford Bronco broke through the ice 190 feet below the bridge and traveled another 190 feet through the water before coming to rest on the bottom in water that was estimated to be approximately 4 degrees Celsius. M-Rover located the vehicle in less than 15 minutes and Coast Guard and police officers were able to recover it.
