Ludwig Koenen named 1996 Henry Russel Lecturer
Ludwig Koenen, the Herbert C. Youtie Distinguished University Professor of Papyrology, will be the 1996 Henry Russel Lecturer.
The annual lectureship is the highest honor the University gives to senior faculty members. Koenen was nominated for the honor by the U-M Research Club and was confirmed by the Regents at their January meeting. He will deliver the Russel Lecture at 4 p.m. March 12 in Rackham Amphitheater.
Koenen, who has taught at Michigan since 1975, is regarded as one of the world’s most renowned papyrologists. His research has centered primarily on the religious history of the Roman Empire, especially the period in which Orthodox Christianity became established as a state religion.
He has been elected a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Since 1975, he has been a corresponding member of the prestigious German Archaeological Institute. He also has served as president of the American Philological Association.
He has served as chair of the Department of Classical Studies and has overseen the organization, cataloguing and preparation for publication of the University’s collection of papyri, the largest in the Western Hemisphere.
Koenen received his doctorate from the University of Cologne, Germany, and held postdoctoral awards at London and Oxford universities.
