LGBPO gets grant for Crossing Bridges research project

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Programs Office (LGBPO) has received a $9,550 grant by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan H.O.P.E. Fund for its Crossing Bridges intergenerational research project.

Volunteers involved in Crossing Bridges, LGBPO’s first funded venture into academics and research, are speaking with older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people in southeast Michigan to determine the social services need of older LGBT adults.

In addition, says Ronni Sanlo, director of LGBPO, the project provides an opportunity for young LGBT people to learn the stories of those who have come before them. “One of the most important aspects of this project is that students can conduct research in areas related to LGBT issues. This grant also gives LGBPO the financial opportunity to create original research which has not been conducted in other institutions, offering a more complete understanding of the lives and social services needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.”

As part of the project, U-M students will develop training programs in multiple areas affecting the lives of older LGBT people and their families in southeast Michigan.
