Leonard, Smith to receive Sarah Goddard Power Award March 19
Joanne Leonard, professor of art and of women’s studies, and Patricia K. Smith, associate professor of economics and director of Women’s Studies at
U-M Dearborn, will receive the Sarah Goddard Power Award March 19.
The award ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Founders Room, Alumni Center, and is open to the public. The awards will be presented by Regent Olivia P. Maynard.
Sponsored by the Academic Women’s Caucus, the award honors “the accomplishments of members of the University community who have distinguished themselves through their leadership, scholarship and sustained service on behalf of women.”
Leonard, an artist, teacher and administrator, has focused on women and feminism in her three fields of teaching, photography and administration. Her photography has been displayed in galleries from San Francisco to Bristol, England. She has brought a feminist artist’s perspective to undergraduate seminars and has worked with various University groups to address gender bias issues.
Smith is the “prime mover” behind Dearborn’ Agenda for Women. She has secured grants to expand and develop the women’s studies program, challenged stereotypes in welfare and public assistance programs, and has brought a diverse group of faculty, students and staff together to promote the Agenda.
The awards are named for Sarah Goddard Power, a former Regent and strong advocate within the
U-M community for women and women’s issues.
