Five faculty members who have received one of the university’s top honors will offer Distinguished University Professor lectures beginning Nov. 5, presenting topics that highlight their work at U-M.

In a tradition that began 13 years ago, recently appointed DUPs give an inaugural lecture, typically during the first or second full year of their appointments.

The University Record will present a preview of each lecture.

The presenters and dates of their lectures are:

• Sharon Glotzer (Nov. 5), named this year as the John Werner Cahn Distinguished University Professor of Engineering. She also is the Stuart W. Churchill Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering, professor of chemical engineering, professor of materials science and engineering and professor of macromolecular science and engineering, College of Engineering; and professor of physics, LSA. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at the Alumni Center, followed by a reception.

• Peter Sparling (Feb. 23), named in 2014 as the Rudolf Arnheim Distinguished University Professor of Dance. He also is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of dance, School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at Duderstadt Video Studio, followed by a reception.

• Ron Suny (March 22), named this year as the William H. Sewell, Jr. Distinguished University Professor of History. He also is professor of history, and professor of political science, LSA. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at Rackham Amphitheatre followed by a reception.

• Harry Mobley (March 29), named in 2014 as the Frederick G. Novy Distinguished University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. He also is chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Frederick G. Novy Collegiate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, and professor of microbiology and immunology, Medical School. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at Rackham Amphitheatre followed by a reception.

• Susan Gelman (April 4), named in 2013 as the Heinz Werner Distinguished University Professor of Psychology. She also is professor of psychology and professor of linguistics, LSA. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. at Rackham Amphitheatre followed by a reception.

Distinguished University Professorships, established in 1947, recognize full or associate professors for exceptional scholarly or creative achievement, national and international reputation, and superior teaching skills. Each professorship bears a name determined by the appointive professor in consultation with her or his dean.

Recipients receive an annual salary supplement of $5,000 and an annual research supplement of $5,000.
