A docent program has been developed by the Friends of the Michigan League so that visitors may tour the building and learn its history. The building was opened and dedicated in 1929 following a fund-raising campaign by women students and alumnae who wanted a place to house the activities of the Women’s League. The League architects, Pond and Pond, also designed the Michigan Union and the Student Publications Building.
Features of the docent-led tours include stained glass windows; tapestries donated by alumnae from Tientsin, China; Pewabic tile manufactured in Detroit; various styles of paneling and slate; murals portraying the notable women of the world; and the garden. The recently renovated fourth-floor hotel rooms also are part of the tour.
Docent tours are offered on the first Thursday of the month at 11 a.m., and begin in the alcove across from the gift shop on the first floor. Visitors also may have lunch at the League Buffet, open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. Group tours may be arranged with the Friends’ coordinator by calling 647-7463. Photo by Rebecca A. Doyle
