Major steps to upgrade university computer facilities, started in 1983. Engineering installed the most advanced computing network that existed on any campus. Faculty and students got the opportunity to buy computers at reduced rates. Computer Sciences moved from LSA to Engineering, and the School of Library Science was renamed the School of Information and Library Studies. The position of vice provost of information technology was created, and filled by computer specialist Douglas Van Howeling in October 1984.
