Larry Warren has been named executive director of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, a position he has filled on an interim basis since August 1996.
Warren’s five-year appointment, approved by the Regents at their meeting last week, is effective immediately. He was recommended for the post by President Lee Bollinger, Gilbert Omenn, executive vice president for medical affairs, and the U-M Hospitals Executive Board.
“I am very pleased to be chosen to lead one of the premier academic health centers in this country,” said Warren, who also was named associate vice president of the Health System. “In partnership with Gil Omenn and our faculty and staff, I look forward to moving our organization to a level of performance excellence that is unprecedented in our history. Our patients and their families deserve no less than our very best.”
Warren has 25 years experience in hospital administration, including 21 years at the U-M. Before becoming interim executive director in 1996, he had served as a personnel representative and compensation analyst, employment manager, assistant personnel administrator, associate hospital director and senior associate director and chief operating officer.
“Larry Warren has performed admirably as interim executive director of the U-M Hospitals since 1996, working with the dean of the Medical School to bring the administrators and physicians into a productive and collegial working relationship,” Omenn said. “He is well-known and highly recognized nationally, and he is known as an advocate for patients and employees throughout our Health System. I am delighted to have Larry as my partner in leading the Health System.”
In 1982-86, Warren worked for Mercy Hospital of Detroit, first as vice president for human resources services, then as executive vice president and chief operating officer. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from Eastern Michigan University.
The three U-M Hospitals-University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and Women’s Hospital-have 872 beds and comprise the core teaching facility for the Medical School. The Health System includes a network of 30 health centers located throughout the region and handles more than one million outpatient visits and 35,000 inpatients annually.
