Landscape analysis: A look at construction projects across campus

Like scores of students crossing the Diag, construction is a familiar friend on the University of Michigan campus. Take a look at some of the major projects filling corners of U-M below. The following updates are as of Aug. 21.

Central Campus Classroom Building and Alexander G. Ruthven Building renovation

Approved budget: $150 million

Funding sources: Investment proceeds

Start date: Fall 2018

Anticipated completion date: Fall 2021

Project description: The 1964 addition to the Ruthven building will be demolished and a new building will be constructed in its place to house active-learning classrooms. The 1928 Ruthven building will be renovated to, in part, provide administrative space to house the university’s central administration currently located in the Fleming Administration Building.

Progress report: Demolition has been completed on the interior of Ruthven and the 1964 addition has been demolished. An earth-retention system has been installed for the new classroom building and the concrete foundation for that building is in progress.

Dentistry Building and W.K. Kellogg Institute expansion and renovation

Approved budget: $140 million

Funding sources: State Capital Outlay funds, Office of the Provost resources, School of Dentistry resources, and investment proceeds

Start date: Fall 2018

Anticipated completion date: Spring 2022

Project description: The renovation will address deferred maintenance, including life safety, electrical, mechanical and plumbing system improvements. Other features will include new, flexible research lab space, an improved patient entrance, modern teaching clinics with flexible furniture and equipment, and a new special needs and inter-professional care clinic to treat patients with complex medical conditions and disabilities.

Progress report: A new student study area has been completed and crews have broken ground on the courtyard addition. Work has started in other areas, including construction on the new patient entry on the north side of the building and on the basement renovation.

Edward Henry Kraus Building renovation and addition

Approved budget: $120 million

Funding sources: Office of the Provost and School of Kinesiology resources

Start date: Summer 2018

Anticipated completion date: Fall 2020

Project description: Along with providing the space for the School of Kinesiology to consolidate its programs under one roof, the project calls for a renovation of existing space and construction of a 62,000-gross-square-foot infill addition within the exterior courtyard.

Progress report: Crews have laid foundations in the courtyard space. Steel has been erected and wall erection has begun on the infill addition. Exterior façade restoration, including terra cotta replacement, tuckpointing and limestone patching is continuing. Work is ongoing on window replacements.

Ford Motor Company Robotics Building

Approved budget: $75 million

Funding sources: College of Engineering resources and gifts, including $22.8 million from Ford Motor Co.

Start date: Winter 2018

Anticipated completion date: Winter 2020

Project description: The new research and teaching facility for the College of Engineering’s robotics program will house research and testing laboratories, offices and classroom space. It will also accommodate space for the college’s corporate partner Ford Motor Co., which will co-locate collaborative research activities within the facility.

Progress report: Steel has been erected, installation of metal wall panels and windows are ongoing, masonry has been conducted and the interior framing and roofing are near completion.

LSA Building First Floor renovation and addition

The glass-walled first-floor renovation and addition to the LSA Building includes the new Opportunity Hub.

Approved budget: $35 million

Funding sources: LSA resources

Start date: Fall 2017

Anticipated completion date: Winter 2020

Project description: Along with renovating about 24,000 gross square feet of the first floor of the LSA Building, the project includes the construction of a 21,000-gross-square-foot addition that will house the LSA Internship Program and Opportunity Hub for students to explore the connection between their liberal arts education and goals.

Progress report: The new addition has been enclosed and site work has been conducted. Interior framing and finishings are ongoing until the project is completed.  

Michigan Union renovation

The renovation of the Michigan Union is expected to be completed this winter.

Approved budget: $85.2 million

Funding sources: Student Life Student Fee for Facility Renewal and investment proceeds

Start date: Spring 2018

Anticipated completion date: Winter 2020

Project description: The renovation of the historic student center will include accessibility and mechanical system improvements, the creation of social space on the main level by enclosing the courtyard, the development of a state-of-the-art student organization and student involvement space, and replacement of the roof and windows.

Progress report: Crews completed demolition work on the building interior and are finishing up roof work. Infrastructure was updated and the installation of skylight and courtyard features is ongoing. Exterior window restoration, window installation and interior finishings work is ongoing.

North Campus Research Complex
Buildings 20 and 25 laboratory renovation

Approved budget: $78.5 million

Funding sources: Medical School resources

Start date: Winter 2018

Anticipated completion date: Winter 2020

Project description: This project will renovate approximately 158,000 gross square feet of space within both buildings to accommodate the Medical School’s wet laboratory research growth over the next decade. A 6,900-gross-square-foot infill addition will be constructed to improve connectivity between the buildings.

Progress report: Remaining work includes interior finishings, ongoing utility work, and roof replacement.

Wall Street West Parking Structure

Construction of a new seven-level parking structure is underway on Wall Street.

Approved budget: $39.5 million

Funding sources: Logistics, Transportation & Parking resources

Start date: Spring 2019

Anticipated completion date: Fall 2020

Project description: Parking on the Medical Campus and Central Campus is in short supply with respect to demand during peak times. To provide additional parking capacity, a seven-level, 1,080-space parking structure on Wall Street is being built over an existing 130-space surface parking lot.

Progress report: Fencing has been installed and site demolition activities are complete. Site infrastructure work and caisson foundation installations are ongoing. The installation of pre-cast concrete panels is scheduled for fall 2019.
