Medzihradsky receives Fogarty International Fellowship
Fedor Medzihradsky, professor of biological chemistry and of pharmacology, has received a Fogarty Senior International Fellowship to carry out sabbatical research on protein-lipid interaction in neural cell membranes at the universities of Utrecht and Wageningen in the Netherlands.
Horne heads orientation group
Pam Horne, director of orientation and the Campus Information Centers, has been elected vice president of the National Orientation Directors Association. The association is composed of 1,200 administrators, faculty and student leaders from 500 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
Stark wins ASHE Research Achievement Award
Joan S. Stark, professor of education, has received the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Research Achievement Award, which honors “outstanding research that significantly advances understanding of higher education. The award recognizes such qualities as creative thought, original perspective, methodological sophistication and interpretive depth.”
McAfee serves on DAPCEP board
Leo C. McAfee Jr., associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP). DAPCEP’s objective is to increase the number of middle and high school minority students who are prepared academically to choose careers in engineering and technical fields.
Nettles serves on national board
Michael T. Nettles, professor of education and public policy, has been appointed to the National Assessment Governing Board by U.S. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander. The 24-member board develops policy guidelines for the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Tien receives honorary degree
T.Y. Tien, professor of materials engineering, has received an honorary doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.
Grand Valley recognizes John and Suzanne Stephenson
John H. Stephenson, interim dean of the School of Art and the Catherine B. Heller Professor of Art, and his wife, Suzanne, have received honorary degrees from Grand Valley State University.
Alumni salute Donabedian
Dorothy Donabedian, professor of nursing, has received a Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Center Alumni Society. The award noted that “during her 26 years as a nursing educator, she has been a national pioneer in creating and testing several educational innovations, including the development of computer-aided instruction programs now used nationally by 50 schools of nursing and a school-based community health nursing service for undergraduate nursing education.”
