Slavens’ book published
Introduction to Systematic Theology by Thomas P. Slavens, professor of information and library studies, has been published by University Press of America. The book helps readers think systematically about meanings of faith and its significance for behavior as well as in striving for consistency and order in understanding the teachings of Jesus and their relevance for modern life.
Watkins named to NIH study section
Paul B. Watkins, associate professor of internal medicine and director, General Clinical Research Center, is a member of the Toxicology Study Section, Subcommittee 1, Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Study sections review grant applications and make recommendations to appropriate NIH advisory councils or boards.
Whitehouse appointed to board
Fred W. Whitehouse, clinical professor of internal medicine, has been appointed to the honorary board of directors of the American Diabetes Association, Michigan Affiliate. He served as president of the association in 1978–79.
Bergstrom receives teaching award
Terry J. Bergstrom, associate professor of ophthalmology, has received the Kaiser Permanente Award for Excellence in Teaching, “the most prestigious award given to a Medical School faculty member.” The award recognizes outstanding teachers in the preclinical portion of the curriculum. The winner must show “superior teaching ability, accessibility to students, willingness to help students, ability to generate enthusiasm for the subject matter and to function as a role model for students.”
