Schmidt named Hunting Family Faculty Fellow
Brian B. Schmidt, assistant professor of Hebrew Bible and ancient West Asian cultures, will be the 1996-97 Hunting Family Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities. Schmidt’s research focusing on the use of divine image in ancient Israelite and Canaanite societies is his contribution to the Institute’s theme for the year, Images and the Imaginary.
Morris, Cooper receive funding for computer networking project
Barbra S. Morris and George Cooper, lecturers in English, received a $10,000 grant from the Herbert and Elsa Ponting Foundation. Funds will help develop computer networking projects to connect faculty and students at Detroit’s Mackenzie High School with faculty and students elsewhere in the United States. The third member of the project, Patricia Benjamin, is a teacher at Mackenzie High School. The Ponting Foundation has funded development of Detroit writing projects that link the University to K-12 schooling since the mid-1980s.
Goldstein and Konigsberg edit book on history of film
Laurence Goldstein, editor of the Michigan Quarterly Review and professor of English, and Ira Konigsberg, professor of English and of Film/Video studies, are co-editors of The Movies: Texts, Receptions, Exposures, which will be published on Feb. 10 by the University of Michigan Press.
Parsigian authors new book on proposals for media projects
Elise K. Parsigian, associate director of the Center for Armenian Research, Studies and Publication, has published Proposed Savvy: Creating Successful Proposals for Media Projects. The book features excerpts from the author’s interviews with more than 40 seasoned practitioners engaged in all divisions of mass media at 22 major media houses across the country.
Adams will chair NIH Genetics Study Section
Julian P. Adams, chair and professor of biology, has been selected to chair the National Institute of Health’s Genetics Study Section, Division of Research Grants, for a term ending June 30. Members are selected “on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors,” says Anthony Demsey, Deputy Director of the Division of Research Grants.
Waller appointed chair of National Motor Carrier Advisory Committee
Patricia Waller, director of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), has been appointed by the United States Secretary of Transportation to chair the National Motor Carrier Advisory Committee. The committee’s purpose is to improve the efficiency, visibility and effectiveness of the Federal Highway Administration’s motor carrier safety programs, regulations and legislation.
Michalowski receives Humanities Award
Piotr Michalowski, the George G. Cameron Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, has received a Michigan Humanities Award from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the Office of the Vice President for Research. During his year of release time from teaching, Michalowski plans to write a work on Mesopotamian literary history.
