Three receive grants from arts groups
Michael K. Daugherty, Gay Delanghe and Peter D. Sparling have received funds from the Creative Artist Grant Program, a partnership program of the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs. Daugherty is associate professor of music. His grant funds a new composition for the Detroit Chamber Winds. Delanghe, associate professor of dance, received an award for murder-mystery choreography. Sparling’s grant funds a performance work evoking “a man’s modern-day pilgrimage through a shifting foreign landscape.” He is associate professor of dance and chair of the Department of Dance.
Harrison heads continuing medical education group
R. Van Harrison, director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education and assistant professor, Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education, has been named president of the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education. The organization represents the heads of continuing medical education programs at medical schools in the United States and Canada.
Davidson receives Goode Award
Edward Davidson, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has received the Harry Goode Memorial Award from the American Federation of Information Processing Societies. The award recognizes Davidson’s “pivotal seminal contributions to the design, implementation and performance evaluation of high performance computing systems.”
AACC honors Alfred
Richard Alfred, associate professor of education and a member of the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, will receive the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Leadership Award for his academic and professional contributions to the community college field.
Four in engineering recognized for research contributions
Four College of Engineering faculty members recently received 1994 Research Excellence Awards from the College. They are Linda M. Abriola, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering; Pramod P. Khargonekar, professor of electrical engineering and computer science; Timothy L. Killeen, professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences; and Gary S. Was, professor of nuclear engineering.
Book by Buss published
The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating, by David M. Buss, professor of psychology and faculty associate, Center for Group Dynamics, has been published by Basic Books. In his book, Buss argues that our ancestors faced many of the same problems we face today in attracting, keeping and sometimes discarding a mate. The sexual tactics that worked over time, he says, surface in our behavior and desires now.
Riba is vice chair of committee, editor of AAP Bulletin
Michelle Riba, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry, has been reappointed vice chair of the Scientific Program Committee, Council on Internal Organization, of the American Psychiatric Association. She also recently was appointed editor of the Bulletin of the Association for Academic Psychiatry.
