MartinusVeltman honored by European Physical Society
Martinus J. Veltman, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Physics, has been awarded the 1993 High Energy and Particle Physics Prize of the European Physical Society.
McVaugh book recognized
Rogers McVaugh, curator emeritus of vascular plants and professor emeritus of botany, has received the Luz Maria Villarreal de Puga Medal for Excellence in Biology from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. McVaugh was honored for Flora Novo-Galiciana, a multivolume description of the plants of the region around Guadalajara.
Glick receives funding from NSF, Cancer Society
Gary D. Glick, assistant professor of chemistry, is one of 20 chemists nationwide to receive 1993 National Science Foundation (NSF) Young Investigators awards. He also has received a three-year $90,500 grant from the American Cancer Society.
Townsend receives award from American Chemical Society
Leroy B. Townsend, the Albert B. Prescott of Medicinal Chemistry and professor of chemistry, has received the 1993 Smissman Bristol-Myers Squibb Award from the American Chemical Society. The award is one of the highest and most prestigious awarded by the 20,000-member group.
Hanashiro named one of 12 Minority Men of the Year
Roy S. Hanashiro, assistant professor of history at U-M-Flint, is among 12 persons selected as Minority Men of the Year by the Detroit Chapter of the Minority Women’s Network. He was cited for community service, particularly his work with U-M-Flint’s Asian American Student Organization in promoting cultural awareness and Asian American issues both on and off campus. His contributions to the University’s annual Women’s History Month program also were noted.
Navvab wins international lighting design award
Mojtaba Navvab, assistant research scientist, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, has received the 1993 Edwin F. Guth Memorial Lighting Award of Distinction for his work on the new Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills. The honor is conferred by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Navvab, along with Stefan R. Graf of Illuminart Lighting Consultants in Ypsilanti, designed the lighting for the center’s styling dome to simulate ambient daylight. The two also were honored for their design of the center’s atrium lighting control systems.
Canadian House of Commons honors Dearborn’s Graves
Helen Graves, U-M-Dearborn professor of political science, has been cited by the Canadian House of Commons for her direction of Dearborn’s political science internship program. Her resolution noted that “Over the past 15 years, through a unique program developed by Dr. Helen Graves, almost 300 political science students from the U-M-Dearborn have become acquainted with our people, issues and parliamentary system of government. The success of this program is a tribute to Dr. Helen Graves’ creativity, enthusiasm and dedication.”
Dearborn faculty member receives Fulbright Grant
Jacqueline Vansant, assistant professor of German at U-M-Dearborn, has received a Fulbright Scholar Grant for 1993–94.
