Knitters: Get out those needles for a worthy cause

By Mary Price, Institute for the Humanities,
and Lisa Weiss, Michigan Union Graphics

Knitters and do-gooders! Join us in knitting hats (or scarves or mittens or whatever you most like to knit) or to donate yarn for others to knit. The items will be sent with students who participate in Project SERVE Alternative Spring Break programs in March.

Last February, 80 hats knit by U-M staff were distributed by SERVE students to children at the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. We want to knit more this year.

Hats, etc. must be delivered to the Project SERVE office in the Michigan Union by Feb. 29.

We’ll provide directions for an easy-to-knit all-size hat that can be done during lunch hours or while watching televisiona hat to warm the heart and head of a child who lives where our generous and helpful undergraduates will spend their week of spring break.

We (knitters) may plan an occasional get-togetherwe could meet now and then over brown-bags and coffee.

E-mail [email protected] or [email protected], or call 763-5493 (Lisa) or 936-3519 (Mary) if you are interested and want to get started, to join our informal group and have a good cause to knit for or if you have questions.

Pay? The good feeling you’ll have for helping someone else.

For information about Alternative Spring Break and other community service opportunities, contact Project SERVE, 936-2437, or send e-mail to [email protected].
