A panel of national journalists and political analysts will discuss the role the media plays in the presidential nomination process in a free, public forum 4-6 p.m. Nov. 30 in Auditorium A, Angell Hall.

“The Press and the Presidency, Part I: Who Picks the Candidates?” will feature alumnus Richard Berke, New York Times political correspondent; Tom Hannon, political director and senior executive producer of CNN’s “Inside Politics”; Warren Mitofsky, founder and former long-time director of the CBS News/New York Times Poll and the Marsh Visiting Professor in Communication Studies; and Robert Teeter, president of a local consulting and research firm and a veteran of seven presidential campaigns, including serving as chairman of George Bush’s 1992 campaign.

“With the participation of such concerned and prominent professionals, we have a unique opportunity to take an informed and constructive reading of the role of the press in the nominating process,” says Vincent Price, chair of the Department of Communication Studies.

Among the issues to be addressed are relations between reporters and candidates, the role of alternative media, journalistic coverage of independent or third-party candidates, campaign tactics, and press behavior from a candidate’s perspective.

Moderated by communication studies Prof. Michael Traugott, the forum is sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies and the Howard R. Marsh Center for the Study of Journalistic Performance. For more information, call 764-0420.
