Jacobs named chair of U-M Health System redesign team
Lloyd A. Jacobs, associate professor of surgery and assistant dean for Veterans Administration Affairs, has been named chair of the seven-member committee that will evaluate and make recommendations for redesigning the University of Michigan Health System.
Jacobs, who was appointed by University Hospitals Executive Director John D. Forsyth, will meet with the Redesign Coordinating Group to first formulate a plan to reduce expenses at the facility over the next year.
“At present, we are an expensive hospital too much so to be competitive,” Jacobs says. “We need to bring expenses into line. This will require careful management and attention to costs of materials and commodities.”
The longer view, Jacobs says, includes a three-year plan to become more competitive in the changing market of health care.
Others on the committee are H. David Humes, professor of internal medicine; Beverly Jones, associate hospital director/chief of nursing affairs; N. Reed Dunnick, chair and professor of radiology; David J. Smith Jr., professor of surgery and associate chair and section head of plastic and reconstructive surgery; David N. Southwell, associate hospital director for finance; and Larry Warren, associate director/administrator for inpatient/outpatient operations and diagnostic treatment services.
