Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt will speak in the Mendelssohn Theater at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 on “Global Warning: A Call for Action on Climate Change.” He is appearing in conjunction with the School of Natural Resources and Environment’s (SNRE) Sept. 25 symposium “Ecosystem Management: For a World We Can Live In.” A question-and-answer period will follow Babbitt’s presentation.
Babbitt has led the Department of Interior in the development of environmental restoration projects including restoration of the ecosystems of South Florida, the Everglades and Florida Bay, and has been instrumental in implementing a multi-species regional plan for the Pacific Northwest.
SNRE’s free, public symposium is 8:30 a.m-4 p.m. Topics include an introduction to ecosystem management and case studies that range from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the Serengeti, Indonesian Borneo and the occurrence of Kirtland’s warbler in northern Lower Michigan.
Among those presenting are SNRE Dean Daniel Mazmanian and SNRE faculty members Steven Yaffee, James Diana, Burton Barnes, Michael Wiley, Julia Wondolleck and Lisa Curran; Mark Boyce of the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point; and Andrew Dobson of Princeton University.
