The inauguration ceremony for President-Elect Mark S. Schlissel has been scheduled for Sept. 5.

Schlissel becomes the university’s president July 14. The Sept. 5 event at Hill Auditorium will celebrate the start of his tenure as the 14th person to lead the university since it was founded in 1817.

While many details of the day’s schedule still are being worked out, events will include scholarly discussions on topics to be determined, an inauguration ceremony at Hill Auditorium, and a late-afternoon celebration open to the university and Ann Arbor community.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring together the university and broader community to celebrate the arrival of Dr. Schlissel,” said Barbara Ackley, who is leading the inaugural planning. “The day will be filled with academic ceremony, educational discourse and a casual, outdoor reception.”

The inauguration comes at the end of the first week of classes for the fall semester.

Schlissel, 56, is currently serving as provost of Brown University. Before being named provost at Brown in 2011, Schlissel was the University of California, Berkeley’s dean of biological sciences in the College of Letters & Science and was the C.H. Li Chair in Biochemistry.
