for Thanksgiving holiday
M-Stores General Supplies Division will be closed Nov. 28-Dec. 1 and will re-open at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 2.
Peirce will present lecture on Women and the Middle East
Leslie Peirce, professor of women’s studies at Cornell University, will present the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies’ annual “Women and the Middle East” lecture at 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in the fourth floor conference room, Rackham Bldg. Peirce will discuss “Heresy, Gender and the Control of Knowledge: Witch-hunting in Ottoman Anatolia?” The free, public lecture is co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program and the Turkish Studies Colloquium.
Mail Service will close for Thanksgiving holiday
Mail Service will be closed Thurs.-Fri. (Nov. 28-29). Normal mail deliveries and pick-ups will be made Wed. (Nov. 27), but mail brought directly to Mail Service must be there by 1 p.m. for processing before the Thanksgiving holiday. Any permit mailings must be dropped at Mail Service before 9:30 a.m. Wed.
With the holiday season fast approaching, Mail Service reminds everyone that section 515.1 of the Standard Practice Guide prohibits Mail Service from delivering personal packages to University departments. Please have your personal packages sent to your home address.
Ski swap will feature new,
used equipment
The Alpine Ski Team will hold its annual ski swap the first weekend in December at the Sports Coliseum Bldg., 721 S. Fifth Ave. All are invited to buy, sell and trade winter sports equipment. Sellers are requested to bring their sports equipment including (but not limited to) downhill and cross country skis, snowboards, boots, bindings, ice skates, rollerblades and clothing, to the Coliseum 4-10 p.m. Dec. 6. U Productions will offer fresh look at Sherlock Holmes
The greatest and most admired detective in all of fiction will take center stage Dec. 5-8 when the Department of Theatre and Drama presents the mystery melodrama Sherlock Holmes at the Power Center for the Performing Arts. Performances of this surprising view of the famous sleuth, Watson and the sinister Professor Moriarity begin at 8 p.m. Dec. 5-7 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 8. Forum will highlight UM Online and digital library program
The FORUM for Administrative Computing will meet 10 a.m.-noon Dec. 12 in the Hussey Room, Michigan League. Financial Operations will close for half-day Dec. 12
Financial Operations, including Student Financial Operations and both the Central and North Campus Cashier’s Offices, will close at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 to participate in the annual Office of the Associate Vice President for Finance holiday party. Financial Operations will reopen at 8 a.m. Dec. 13.

H.E. Gernando Salleo, Italy’s ambassador to the United States, will speak at 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Welker Room, Michigan Union. Sounds of the season abound
in Music School concerts
Whether you fancy jazz or classical music, orchestral or solo performances, percussion or voice, the School of Music has a concert scheduled in December to please you. Highlights of the wide variety of vocal and instrumental performances upcoming include: a performance by the Jazz Ensemble led by new faculty member and pianist Ellen Rowe in a program featuring big band sounds at 8 p.m. Dec. 4 in Rackham Auditorium; a concert by Edward Sarath and the Creative Arts Orchestra including original works and collective improvisations at 8 p.m. Dec. 5 in Rackham Auditorium; and, in honor of minimalist composer Steve Reich’s 60th birthday year, a presentation by the Percussion Ensemble at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 in McIntosh Theatre of his 85-minute composition, “Drumming”—the first complete performance of the work in Ann Arbor. Rackham `Evening’ examines power, pleasure of the movie
1996 is the 100th anniversary of filmmaking, and “Evenings at the Rackham,” sponsored by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, will mark that anniversary with a lecture on “The Power and the Pleasures of the Movie” at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in Rackham Auditorium. Speakers will discuss the history and mystique of the moving image, illustrating their presentations with film clips. The program is sponsored by the Program in Film and Video Studies. Pound House seeks student
childcare volunteers
Pound House Children’s Center currently is seeking student volunteers to assist in their childcare program for children ages 2-1/2-5. Students may work for academic credit if enrolled in Sociology 389 or Psychology 305, volunteer, or participate with a work-study grant. Michigan Radio presents
Lauren Wagner “On A-I-R”
Michigan Radio’s “On A-I-R” broadcasts continue in December with its special series of one-hour programs featuring soprano Lauren Wagner. Mondays at 8 p.m. Wagner, the first-prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild New York competition, will sing and discuss vocal repertoire. On Dec. 2, the program will feature French and Spanish songs. The Dec. 9 program, with filmmaker Beth Winsten, will explore American songs. Pianist Michele Cooker and the Arianna String Quartet will appear with Wagner on Dec. 16. A program of Christmas music is scheduled Dec. 16, and Wagner will perform her favorite compositions on Dec. 30. The programs will be broadcast on the U-M public radio stations—WUOM (91.7 FM), Ann Arbor; WFUM (91.1 FM), Flint; and WVGR (104.1 FM), Grand Rapids. For more information, call 764-9210.

Stuart Ewen will speak
at Rackham Dec. 12
Stuart Ewen, whose 1988 book, All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary America, inspired the Bill Moyers PBS series “Public Mind: Image and Reality,” will speak 7-8:30 p.m. Dec. 12 in Rackham Amphitheater. His free, public lecture, “Visual Persuasion: A Citizen’s Guide,” will be presented by the School of Art & Design as the inaugural event in a series of public lectures sponsored by the Michigan project on Persuasive Media: the Yaffee Initiative. MIWH issues call for posters
on research in women’s health
The Michigan Initiative for Women’s Health (MIWH) has announced a Graduate Student Poster Session on Research in Women’s Health to be held July 16 in conjunction with the MIWH invitational workshop, “Methods and Measures: Emerging Strategies for Women’s Health Research.” Graduate students are invited to submit abstracts for individual posters emphasizing methods and measures in women’s health. CRLT schedules
GSI teaching orientation
The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) will offer a teaching orientation for new graduate student instructors (GSI) 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 6 in Rackham Auditorium. The Winter 1997 GSI Teaching Orientation is open to all graduate students but is designed specifically to help new GSIs prepare for their initial teaching experiences. The orientation consists of a morning session and an afternoon session of two concurrent workshops aimed at developing pedagogical skills. Lunch will be provided for all participants. Departments with GSIs whose first teaching appointments begin in January should contact CRLT with a list of their names and addresses by Thurs. (Nov. 22). U Hospital Lobby
The Greenhills School Choirs, under the direction of Wendy Bloom, will perform at 12:20 p.m. Dec. 5 in the first floor Lobby, University Hospital. Thanksgiving holiday hours
The Media Union will close at 5 p.m. Wed. (Nov. 27) and remain closed on Thurs. (Nov. 28) and Fri. (Nov. 29). The Union will reopen on Sat. (Nov. 30) at 8 a.m., resuming the normal 24-hour schedule.

Hallelujah! Choral Union
performs Messiah Dec. 7-8
Since 1879, Ann Arbor has celebrated the holiday season with Handel’s most joyous oratorio, the Messiah. The University Musical Society’s Choral Union, directed by Music Director Thomas Sheets, will sing the holiday classic at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 and at 8 p.m. Dec. 8 in Hill Auditorium. Deadline extended for lecturers’ grant competition
The deadline for submitting proposals for the Lecturers’ Professional Development Grant competition has been extended from Nov. 15 to Dec. 6. The grant competition, sponsored by the Office of the President and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), is open to lecturers with continuing appointments on the Ann Arbor campus. Ten grants of up to $2,000 each will be awarded each year for professional development activities including creative endeavors, research, scholarship and teaching.
