New requisitions must accompany outgoing mail
All outgoing mail sent to Mail Service for processing must be accompanied by a new Mail Service requisition with the exact piece count for all classes of mail. This requisition should also be used to list all campus mailings of 100 pieces or more. Builk mailing procedures also have changed. If you send bulk mailings, please contact Mail Service, 764-9227, for current information.
Plant Services guide now available
“A User’s Guide to Plant Operations” is now available for Plant Operations, 763-9333. The guide includes the phone numbers, addresses and descriptions of the different units of Plant Operations.
Party will be held in honor of Jim Kaufman’s retirement
A party will be held in honor of Jim Kaufman’s retirement 2-4 p.m. July 31 in the second floor conference room, Campus Safety Services Bldg. NEH Stipends available for summer 1997
The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies nominates faculty members for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend Competition. The stipend is $4,000 with the total increased to $7,000 if a Rackham fellowship is awarded for the same project. Interested faculty should use the Rackham Faculty Grants and Fellowships application available in Room 1020 Rackham Bldg., or by calling 936-1647 or sending e-mail to [email protected]. Deadline is Aug. 30 for funding in summer 1997.
U-M-Dearborn hosts open house for adult students
The U-M-Dearborn will host an open house for adult students 11:30-2:30 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Aug. 1 in the University Mall Bldg. During the event, titled “Make Your Move to Michigan: Strategies for Success,” prospective students will be able to meet University representatives and find information on programs of study, admissions procedures, financial aid and career opportunities. English courses available for visiting scholars, faculty, staff
The English Language Institute is offering two classes for international visiting scholars, faculty and staff who would like to improve their English skills. Courses are free to visiting scholars, but staff on U-M salaries will be handled on a case-by-case basis. “English for Living and Studying” will be held 4:10-5:30 p.m. Mon. and Wed. during the fall semester. “Academic Communications Seminar” will be held 4:10-6 p.m. Thurs. in the fall. Guide to resources for students of color available in August
The 1996-97 edition of Campus Connections: A Guide to Campus Resources for Students of Color will be available in August. The guide contains information on general services and programs, services and programs at colleges and schools, student organizations and residence hall councils, and cultural celebrations by academic term. How should staff be recognized for excellence?
Attention staff! You’ve put in long hours on an excellent project . . . You made a particularly effective presentation at a large meeting. What sort of recognition would you like to receive for a job well done? Ideas are needed from University staff about what they would consider effective and appropriate recognition for excellence on the job. Send suggestions to Nora Gessert, [email protected], or Sally Grace, [email protected]. They will use the ideas to create a list of ways to recognize University employees. This list will be published in a special section of a future edition of The University Record.
Farewell reception will be held Aug. 1 for John Forsyth
Friends and colleagues of John Forsyth, president and chief executive officer of the U-M Health System, are invited to a farewell reception 3-5 p.m. Aug. 1 in the University Hospital Cafeteria. Forsyth is leaving the University after 26 years of service to lead IASD Health Services Corporation.
Visit the Laurentian in Grand Haven
The University research vessel Laurentian, operated by the Center for Great Lakes and Aquatic Sciences, will hold an open house 1-8 p.m. Aug. 23 at the dock in Grand Haven, as part of the annual Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. The ship, which has been based in Grand Haven for 22 years, will offer tours of the ship’s pilot house, laboratories and other facilities.
Open House to be held by Temporary Staffing Services
Temporary Staffing Services will host an open house 1-5 p.m. July 31 in Suite 18, Wolverine Tower, to introduce representatives from Kelly and Manpower Temporary Services. Both services were awarded a two-year contract to provide supplemental support.
Volunteers needed for National Night Out
Volunteers are needed to participate in the University’s National Night Out event 5-8 p.m. Aug. 6 on the North Campus Diag. The evening fosters partnerships between citizens and law enforcement officials in the fight against crime. Volunteers are needed to serve food, sign up volunteers, distribute T-shirts and assist with children’s activities. For information, call 763-3434.
Animania is Aug. 10
The Japanese Animation Film Society presents Animania, a free festival of Japanese animation, 5-11 p.m. Aug. 10 in Auditorium A, Angell Hall. The festival features “Miyuki-chan in Wonderland,” “Megazone 23 part 2” and “Black Jack.” All films are English subtitled. New video available from Turner Geriatric Clinic

Paper art exhibit on display in Slusser Gallery
The School of Art and Design will host the National Paper Invitational Exhibition through Fri. (July 26) at the Slusser Gallery in the Art and Architecture Bldg. Softball game to benefit U-M-Dearborn program
The Detroit Red Wings and WRIF-FM disc jockeys will play a softball game to benefit the Woodward Elementary School Reading Club, a collaboration between the U-M-Dearborn and the elementary school. Deadline for golf scramble is tomorrow
The entry deadline for the 1996 summer term two-person golf scramble, sponsored by the Intramural Sports Program, is 2 p.m. tomorrow (July 24) at the Intramural Sports Bldg. An entry fee of $10 per team will be charged. The golf course fee is an additional $17 per person. Tournament will be conducted at the U-M Golf Course on Fri. (July 26). Botanical Gardens will dedicate Gateway Garden July 27
The Matthaei Botanical Gardens will celebrate the dedication and grand opening of its new signature Gateway Garden at 10 a.m. Sat. (July 27). Following the dedication, activities will be held throughout the day, including a kids botanical discovery room, docent-led tours of the gardens, herbal taste-testing, a New World plant lecture, and storytelling for children. The New American is at Museum of Art
“The New American,” a new installation by Detroit artist Carl Demeulenaere, is on display through Aug. 18 at the Museum of Art. The artist uses Grant Wood’s American Gothic as a basis for examining the contemporary American family from a non-traditional perspective. LIR presents They Might Be Giants
