How to get here from ‘out there’—MichNet dial-in numbers
From the Information Technology Digest
How do I check my e-mail from Grand Rapids? Or Petoskey? Or Escanaba? These are common questions asked by U-M users who travel or live in Michigan locations outside of the Ann Arbor area and want to dial a local number to reach a Network Access Server (NAS).
There are MichNet NASs in many locations throughout the state, and these are listed in both print and online formats. Merit Network Inc., which operates MichNet, prints a list of Network Acce ss Servers (NASs) throughout Michigan in its quarterly publication, MichNet News.
However, because Merit continues to add new NASs throughout the state of Michigan on a regular basis, and because the access phone numbers for existing NASs occasionally change as various services are upgraded, the printed list of NASs is often out of date within a month or two of its publication.
For this reason, MichNet also publishes two online lists of NAS phone numbers. “MichNet Dial-In Numbers” lists all MichNet shared NASs; “Announcing NEW MichNet Dial-In Numbers” contains only those NASs most recently commissioned.
There are many ways to access this information online. Here are a few:
Using terminal emulation software. Dial in to any MichNet NAS. At the “host:” prompt, type “help” (lower case, no quotes). Select either “MichNet Dial-In Numbers” or “Announcing NEW MichNet Dial-In Numbers.”
Use PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) software or an Ethernet connection.
Through the ITD Login Service: Access one of the Login servers (host: login.itd.umich.edu). At the Unix % prompt, type “gopher help.mich.net 7042” (lower case, no quotes), then select either “MichNet Dial-in Numbers” or “Announcing NEW MichNet Dial-In Numbers.”
Through GOpherBLUE: While this will show you the list of MichNet NASs, there isn’t a link to the list of new NASs in any of the Gopher menus.
Through the World-Wide Web.
For those users dialing in from the Ann Arbor area, the following is a list of Ann Arbor Dial-In Numbers:
