Hospitals among top 10, according to U.S. News

The University of Michigan Hospitals have moved into the top 10 list of best hospitals in America, according to an annual survey by U.S. News and World Report. The Medical Center tied for 10th this year, up from 15th a year ago. The U-M also received recognition in 15 specialties.

Factors considered in compiling the rankings included reputation with board-certified specialists, mortality statistics and the amount of medical technology. Overall, 1,800 hospitals met some or all of the criteria for consideration.

The category rankings are: Overall-10, Otolaryngology-4, Geriatrics-9, Rheumatology-10, Rehabilitation-10, Pulmonary-11, Endocrinology-11, Gastroenterology-11, Urology-12, Neurology-12, Orthopedics-12, Cancer-15, Psychiatry-15, Gynecology-18, Cardiology-20, AIDS-28. Photo by Bob Kalmbach
