Holiday dates, policies announced

The University has announced the holiday schedule for the balance of 1996 to help units plan work and vacation schedules.

Seven official holidays will be observed:

Memorial Day, May 27.

Independence Day, July 4.

Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Thanksgiving and the day following, Nov. 28&endash;29.

Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 1997.

In a memo to deans, directors and department heads, Jackie R. McClain, executive director of Human Resources and Affirmative Action (HR/AA), notes: “Because other days may be of more significance than a University-designated holiday, staff members may request approval to substitute up to three holidays of their choice for any three University holidays.”

Written request of substitutions must be given to a staff member’s immediate supervisor by July 1.

In addition, most U-M units observe four season days: Dec. 26&endash;27 and Dec. 30&endash;31.

Units that must operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week or that must schedule work during the season days are allowed flexibility in scheduling them between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15.

Employees in bargained-for units observe holidays and season days as indicated in their respective agreements.
