Hockey team invited to White House

The U-M’s 1996 NCAA Division I national champion hockey team will be honored at a special reception with Vice President Al Gore on May 6 at the White House.

President James J. Duderstadt, the players, coach Red Berenson and his staff, and other University officials have been invited to a mid-morning ceremony to be hosted by Vice President Gore on behalf of President Bill Clinton.

“It is a tremendous honor for our student athletes to be invited to the White House,” Duderstadt said. “We’re all very proud of the hockey team.

“In winning the national championship, our players and coaches, under the leadership of coach Berenson, have again demonstrated the results that can be achieved by working together as a team and with a commitment to ex cellence.”
