Five EMU scholars awarded Fulbright grants

This year, five scholars from Eastern Michigan University have been awarded Fulbright grants for 2015-16 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Fulbright program is a governmental international educational exchange program.

MSU receives $2.5M gift for business, basketball

Alumni couple John and Becky Duffey have donated $2.5 million to support Michigan State University. $1 million of the gift will go to MSU’s Broad College of Business to create a named professorship in the School of Hospitality Business. The remaining $1.5 million will go toward MSU Athletics to help construct a basketball hall of history and make other renovations at Breslin Center.

Wayne State approves new AGRADE degree program

Wayne State University recently approved a new degree program offered between the undergraduate physics program in the physics department of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering. The AGRADE degree program is intended for students who wish to earn an engineering degree after five years, and offers the benefits of a physics undergraduate degree as well. The new program will debut fall 2016.

UCLA receives $11.7M gift for music school

The estate of UCLA alumni David Dobrow has endowed $11.7 million to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Dobrow was a pre-med student who played on the Bruins football team for the 1947 Rose Bowl, but had a great passion for classical music. The bequest from the David Dobrow Trust will establish an endowment to ensure the school’s financial security. The David and Irmgard Dobrow Fund will provide the school with nearly $500,000 per year in perpetuity.

University of Maryland announces information science program

The University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies announced a new Bachelor of Science in Information Science degree. The program will support students looking to work in a variety of fields including government, health care, education, policy and technology by receiving an information-centric education. The program is the school’s first undergraduate program, joining three graduate degree programs.
