Eastern Michigan University elects university’s 23rd president

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents has named James M. Smith as the university’s new president. Following the retirement of interim president Donald Loppnow, Smith will serve as EMU’s 23rd president. Smith formerly served as president of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He will assume his new role beginning July 1, 2016.

WMU announces new master’s degree in public health

Western Michigan University has launched a new program that allows students to earn a Master of Public Health degree. The degree program is designed for students to complete in two years, consisting of 46 credits offered mostly online. It aims to prepare students for careers in biostatistics, environmental health, health education and administration, epidemiology, and social and community health service. The program will welcome its first class fall 2016.

MSU School of Journalism partners with Smithsonian center

The Michigan State University School of Journalism recently announced a new partnership with the Smithsonian Latino Center. MSU’s School of Journalism was selected by the Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum Educational Advisory Committee and will aid the center in research and design of products and services as part of its rebranding initiative. The goal of the partnership is to create opportunities for education about Latino culture using innovative technologies and digital storytelling.

Harvard challenge raises $50M for housing renovation

As part of a gift made by the Hutchins Family Foundation in October 2012, Harvard University launched a fundraising challenge to support the Harvard Houses. The Hutchins Family Challenge aimed to fundraise for House renewal and raised more than $50 million from 40 donations. These gifts will now be used towards renovation of the residential Houses, which are home to dining, advising and student programming on campus.

Rutgers to offer new Business of Fashion graduate program

The Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick will offer a new Master of Science in Business of Fashion degree program. It aims to bridge the gap between the creative and business worlds of the fashion industry. The program offers a full-time one-year or a part-time two-year option and includes 30 credits. The program will launch with 25-30 students in fall 2016.
