Wayne State receives $1.4M grant to enhance mathematics in Detroit

The National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program awarded Wayne State University with a $1.4 million grant. The funding will go towards TeachDETROIT — a new program aimed at preparing the next generation of elementary and middle school mathematics teachers in Detroit Schools. Wayne State will partner with Henry Ford College, the Detroit Public Schools and Wayne Westland Community Schools to recruit, train and induct 56 new mathematics teachers for Detroit Schools. The funding will provide scholarships and stipends to candidates to support their participation in an urban teacher residency program for 15 months.

GVSU expects new health facility

The facilities planning department at Grand Valley State University has started plans for a new facility to expand the downtown Grand Rapids health campus. The building will serve as an extension of the College of Health Professions and the Kirkhof College of Nursing, providing extra room for additional resources. The facility is scheduled to open for students in the 2018-19 academic year.

UNL receives $20M donation for media arts program

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced a $20 million gift from the Johnny Carson Foundation. The funding will create an academic program and facility focused on interdisciplinary learning, creativity and research in emerging media. The program will be led by the university’s Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film within the Hixon-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. It will focus on digital virtual production and design.

OSU receives $14M gift for engineering students, faculty

The Ohio State University received a $14 million endowment from alumnus Edward Claugus’ estate. The gift will benefit the students, faculty and staff of the College of Engineering and the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In recognition of his mother Bernice L. Claugus, the funds will go towards an endowed chair and endowed funds and scholarships in chemical and biomolecular engineering, as well as in engineering.

UCLA School of Law receives $5M endowment

The UCLA School of Law has received a $5 million gift from attorney Kenneth Ziffren. The donation will establish The Ziffren Center for Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law. The Ziffren Center will expand the school’s program through curricular innovations, research, new programming and training to benefit students and faculty.
