EMU approves new undergraduate neuroscience major

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents has approved a new undergraduate major in neuroscience. While neuroscience has traditionally been classified as a subdivision of biology, the program now is an interdisciplinary science, with the biology, chemistry and psychology departments bringing it together.

CMU receives $5M donation from Dow Foundation

The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation recently made a $5 million donation to Central Michigan University. The funding will go towards efforts to put middle school students throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region on a path toward science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. The investment, received by the College of Education and Human Services, will create programs for children ages 10-15, as well as professional development for teachers.

Northwestern receives $25M donation, brings campaign to $100M

Northwestern University received a $25 million donation from alumni Patrick G. Ryan and Shirley W. Ryan as part of the ‘We Will. The Campaign for Northwestern.’ The gift will be used to advance research and teaching, and $10 million will be used for the Ryan Family Chair Challenge to match gifts made by other Northwestern supporters for the creation of endowed professorships. This donation brings the campaign total to more than $100 million, and increases the Ryan’s total giving to Northwestern to nearly $200 million.

UNC receives $3.5M gift to further campus cost savings

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill received a $3.5 million donation over three years from alumnus Julian H. Robertson Jr. UNC will match Robertson’s donation with other private contributions and non-state institutional funds. The donation will be used to support UNC’s ongoing effort to identify and implement operational efficiency initiatives to advance their academic mission. Additional funds will further UNC to recruit faculty and students, encourage entrepreneurship and bolster research.

Purdue breaks ground on Centaur Equine Diagnostic and Surgical Center

On Oct. 20, Purdue University broke ground on the $8.8 million Centaur Equine Diagnostic and Surgical Center. The facility will serve as a satellite facility for the College of Veterinary Medicine, providing medical and surgical services for horse owners. It will also support equine research and education for equine specialists. Completion of the facility is expected by the end of 2016.
