Central Michigan receives diversity award
Central Michigan University has received a 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The HEED award is a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Eighty-three colleges and universities were recognized this year.
Wayne State to host labor conference
Wayne State University will host the 36th Annual North American Labor History Conference (NALHC), October 16-18 at its main Detroit campus. The conference hosts activists, scholars, union members and researchers from around the world. This year, the conference theme is “The Nature of Work,” discussing the environment in relation to the workforce.
EMU Business dedicates classrooms to alumni
The Eastern Michigan University College of Business has honored two distinguished alumni, Chairman of the EMU Board of Trustees, Regent Jim Webb and his wife Cathy Webb, by dedicating a classroom in their name. About 50 EMU classrooms are dedicated to alumni, in recognition of their outstanding service to the College of Business.

UCLA receives $1 million for engineering
The University of California – Los Angeles announced Sept. 8 a $1 million gift to the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. This estate gift will support undergraduate engineering research and scholarships. The gift comes from engineering professor Oscar Stafsudd Jr. and his wife Jacqueline, both UCLA alums.
University of Maryland receives largest single gift
The University of Maryland announced Sept. 12 a gift of $31 million from Oculus co-founder, CEO and UMD alumnus Brendan Iribe — the largest gift in the university’s history. The majority of the gift, $30 million, will help fund construction of the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation. The remaining $1 million will establish the Brendan Iribe Scholarship in Computer Science.
