LSSU receives largest single bequest in its history

Lake Superior State University has received the largest gift and single bequest in its history, from the estate of former Sault Ste. Marie resident Larry Regan Smart. Before his death in December 2013, Smart named LSSU as a residual beneficiary in a trust, though Smart and his family requested that the amount of the legacy gift remain confidential.

Saginaw Valley State University renames center

The Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control voted to honor former President Eric Gilbertson’s service to the university by renaming SVSU’s Regional Education Center as Eric R. Gilbertson Hall. Gilbertson retired from the presidency in February after holding the position for more than 24 years.

Harvard receives $350M gift for public health

Harvard University announced Sept. 8 a $350 million gift — the largest in Harvard’s history — to support efforts at the Harvard School of Public Health to tackle the world’s toughest health challenges, including pandemics, poverty and failing health care systems. The gift comes from The Morningside Foundation, established by the family of the late T.H. Chan.

UT-Austin completes $3 billion campaign

The University of Texas at Austin has completed its Campaign for Texas program by raising $856 million in 2013-14. During the eight-year campaign, which ended Aug. 31, the university received an estimated $3.1 billion in gifts, pledges and donations. Students benefited from the construction of new buildings, state-of-the-art classrooms and cutting-edge research spaces across the UT-Austin campus.
