Summer construction transforms CMU’s campus

From new football turf to the near completion of the largest capital project in university history, Central Michigan University’s campus was far from quiet this summer. Crews tackled more than 100 construction projects involving campus buildings over the past few months, including the Biosciences Building and reconstruction on Grawn Hall – CMU’s oldest building – which will include a 16,200-square-foot renovation of existing space and a 6,600-square-foot, two-story addition to the west side of the building.

OU researcher receives $64K grant to study depression screening

Oakland University’s School of Health Sciences will be studying depression screening among southeast Michigan’s Arab and Chaldean population with $64,000 in grant funding from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. Dr. Florence Dallo, associate professor and interim program director in the program in Wellness, Health Promotion and Injury Prevention in the School of Health Sciences, will oversee the study.

Cyberinfrastructure project receives $110 million award

The National Science Foundation announced a $110 million, five-year award to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois and 18 partner institutions to continue and expand the activities undertaken through the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment, a cornerstone of the nation’s cyberinfrastructure ecosystem. XSEDE accelerates open scientific discovery by enhancing the productivity and capability of researchers, engineers and scholars and broadening their participation in science and engineering.

Nebraska receives $6M grant to build neuroscience brain trust

Psychologists from the University of Nebraska will share in a $6 million National Science Foundation grant that will expand the breadth of cognitive neuroscience research capabilities in the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior and the department of psychology. The grant was awarded from the NSF’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. It is a four-year, multi-institutional grant that will build a brain trust of researchers from Nebraska, the University of Delaware at Newark and the University of Nevada, Reno.
